Vancouver Canada – November 7 and 8, 2015
The first ever North American and Caribbean ITF Taekwon-Do was a great success! The event was sponsored by the Canadian Taekwon-Do Federation International and organized by Mr. Kevin Reinelt and the members of Triumph Taekwon-Do.
375 colour belt and black belt competitors from Jamaica, Trinidad, the USA and Canada gathered in Vancouver Canada at the world class venue of the Olympic Oval, originally built for the 2010 Winter Olympics Speed Skating events. This amazing venue easily fit 7 competition rings as well as a warm-up area, a concourse with vendors and bleacher seating for 500 people. One of the highlights was a special medal presentation area featuring the same medal podium used for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The tournament included almost all standard events: individual patterns, sparring, power and special technique breaking, as well as team patterns, team sparring and prearranged sparring.
Opening ceremonies saw the march in of all the athletes behind the flags of their countries. The music for the entry anthem was composed and produced specially for this event by 3rd degree black belt, Mr. Mattheus Brown.
Some of the top black belts on the continent participated, including a few world champions, showing their amazing skills in patterns, sparring and breaking. Colour belts age 6 and up got into the act as well, showing their patterns and sparring skills.
Also for the first time in North America, there were electronic scoring systems for all the rings, helping to make the competition even more exciting.
Many thanks to our volunteers who really did a great job of welcoming our participants and making the event run smoothly. Also, thanks to our sponsors and supporters – the Government of British Columbia, City or Richmond, RCap Leasing, Bushido Martial Arts Supplies and Mightyfist BC – for helping to make this event a reality. Everyone had a wonderful experience and is looking forward to next time!
