Congratulations Mrs. Downey!

Mrs. Downey (far right) with Master Norman, Master Laquerre, GM Marano and GM Lan, and fellow instructors whom tested at the IIC in Halifax

Mrs. Cathy Downey, wife of Master Scott Downey and co-owner/instructor of Downey’s Taekwon-Do Centers in St. John’s and Mount Pearl was recently promoted to 6th Degree Black Belt by the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF). The promotion took place over the weekend in Halifax, Nova Scotia during an International Instructors Course (IIC). The test was conducted by Master Pierre Laquerre (8th Degree Black Belt and technical director for ITF Taekwon-Do in Canada). The test consisted of patterns, step-sparring, self-defense, board breaking, and answering questions regarding the history, philosophy, and technical content of ITF Taekwon-Do. As a result of her promotion to 6th Degree Black Belt she has earned the distinction of becoming the first female from Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada to be promoted to 6th Degree Black Belt by the International Taekwon-Do Federation and only the second female in Canada to be promoted to 6th Degree Black Belt. Her goal is to become the first female ITF Taekwon-Do “Master” in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada by achieving the rank of 7th Degree Black Belt. In order to reach this goal she will have to continue her training and teaching until she reaches the time requirement for 7th Degree Black Belt, which is six years (2017). Congratulations from your husband, Master Scott Downey (7th Degree Black Belt), your sons Tyler and Brandon, family and friends, and students of Downey’s Taekwon-Do Centers in St. John’s and Mount Pearl.
