It was 90 years ago today that the Founder of Taekwon-Do was born.  General Choi was born on November 9, 1918 in Hwa Dae, Myŏngchon county, in what is now the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.  General Choi’s father sent him to study calligraphy under Han Il Dong, who was also “a master of Taek Kyon, the ancient Korean art of foot fighting”  In 1937, General Choi travelled to Japan for further study. In Kyoto, he met a fellow Korean with the surname Kim, who was a karate instructor and taught Choi this martial art.

General Choi combined elements of taekkyeon and karate to develop “Taekwon-Do”, and it was so named on April 11, 1955.  General Choi founded the Oh Do Kwan, and held an honorary 4thdan ranking in the Chung Do Kwan.  He is also the author of the first English Taekwondo syllabus book, entitled “Taekwon-Do” published in 1965.

General Choi passed away on June 15, 2002 in Pyongyang, North Korea. General Choi is also listed in the Taekwondo Hall of Fame with various titles: “Father and Founder of Taekwon-Do,” “Founder and First President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation,” and “Founder of Oh Do Kwan.

You will find a revised eddition of the “National Umpire Certificate Application Form” in the CTFI Resources and Downloads section.

Further here are a few notes on it’s usage.

Do not send anymore the individual form. Even if you request a certificate for one person use the 2008 national umpire form. Only 4th degree and above who participated at an International Umpire course may apply for the International Umpire “A” certificate. National Organizations may organize their own National Umpire “B” courses and may request directly to the ITF the International Umpire “B” certificate. Those requesting an International Umpire “A” must be in possession of an International Umpire “B” certificate. Those requesting the International Umpire “A” but not in possession of the International Umpire “B” may request the Umpire “B” and “A” certificates at the same time – please use the attached application form. Announcement:

Dear Masters, Instructors, Coaches and Athletes,

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY…

In addition to Master Laquerre’s email invitation below for the 4th Can-Am Taekwon-Do Championships being held on April 19th in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, each club must also complete the attached excel spreadsheet as a master registration list of the competitors they are sending to this event.
Invitation – English

EXCEL REGISTRATION – UPDATE

To be clear, the “individual registration forms” (Word Document) must be completed and sent to Master Laquerre with the waiver signed and the fees attached, to the mailing address indicated on the letter. However, in addition, the Excel spreadsheet attached titled “2008 Can-Am Club Registration List” must be completed as a recap of your competitors and emailed to kenmackenzie@ns.sympatico.ca before the deadline of APRIL 5th, 2008 at 6pm.

It is very important that ALL INFORMATION is entered including weight, height and date of birth. This information is used to prepare the draws and divisions and without it, we cannot prepare properly. Therefore, any “late” or “incomplete registrations” will NOT be accepted after the dealine and the competitor will not be registered for the Can-Ams – NO EXCEPTIONS!

When you open the “Excel” file, it has several tabs along the bottom. The first one is labelled “INSTRUCTIONS”. Please read these carefully. The additional tabs are where you enter the information on your competitors according to rank. Please enter their name on the appropriate space that represents their rank. If you do not have Microsoft Excel, please ask someone in your club who has this program to assist you. If you have any questions about completing this form, please contact me directly at at the following email… kenmackenzie@ns.sympatico.ca.

On another note, there will be a weigh-in for Black Belts – Juniors and Adults at the Delta Hotel in Trois Rivieres from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on the Friday evening, April 18th, 2008, as well as a last minute weigh-in on the morning of the event from 8:00am – 9:00am at the University of Quebec – Trois Rivieres where the championship will be held. Anyone failing to show up to the weigh-in or failing to make the required weight for their category will be disqualified – NO EXCEPTIONS. Please advise your students of this information.

Again, it is most important to have this Excel file filled out complete and emailed prior to the deadline of APRIL 5th, 2008 at 6pm as there will be no late enrties accepted. There are still 13 days left to complete this and ask any questions you may have, before then.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Even a 30 centimeter snow storm couldn’t stop the 200+ competitors from four Provinces from attending the 2008 Eastrern Canadian Championships. The Championships were held in Oakville and had representation from Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Following the Canadian National Anthem, everyone stood in a moment of silence in memory of the late founder General Choi Hong Hi followed by the “Ode to General Choi”. To wrap up the opening ceremonies, CTFI Eastern Vice President Master Pierre Laquerre opened the tournament with a few words encouraging words, and also took home the most supportive school award.

Color belt competition was finished at 1:30pm and then the tournament moved right into the Junior and Senior Black Belt catagories. Competition was firece as 70+ black belts kicked and punched their way through the patterns and sparring competition. The day finished out with the men’s Hyper weight final which pitted Mark Silva of Ontario against Alexandre Primeau of Quebec. After two close and grueling rounds Quebec came out on top and everyone left in high spirits. Congratulations to the Taekwon-Do Academy of Ontario on hosting a fantastic event.

Please see the Upcoming Events page for new information regarding the 2008 Western Canadian Championships.

Blackburn Taekwon-Do in Ontario has a new location at the Active Living Club.

The following is a report from www.itf-ontario.ca
The Taekwon-Do Academy of Ontario (TAO) started off it’s second year of operations with a blast by attracting over 100 participants to it’s 1st Annual Technical Conference. The event is free of charge for all black belt members of the TAO. The seminar’s participants weren’t limited to Ontario students only however. The event boasted participants from across Canada and the United States including Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New York, Philadelphia, Texas, New Mexico and even a 4th degree instructor all the way from Fairbanks, Alaska.

Although this is TAO’s first such conference, it has been a longstanding tradition for TAO’s technical director, Mr. Mike Morningstar, who is also head instructor of Morningstar Taekwon-Do in Oakville. This is Mr. Morningstar’s fourth such event and he certainly took the student’s through their paces. The seminar was 12 hours long and spanned two days!

On the first day Mr. Morningstar focused primarily on patterns, covering up to Juche-Tul but with a good dose of calisthenics, stretching, fundamental and kicking exercises as well. Master Pierre Laquerre, Technical Director for the Canadian Taekwon-Do Federation, led the second day up to Tong-Il.

Also in attendance were 7th degree Master Richard Lajunesse from Quebec, Master Ruben Suarez from New York and Master Fabian Nunez from Texas. Having such experienced instructors made the event something special and an overwhelming success. It is also encouragement for TAO, who has seen the addition of 8 new schools to their ranks over the past year. For more news about the Ontario Association visit www.itf-ontario.ca.
