The following is information on the 10th Italian Open to be held in Fontane di Villorba (Treviso), Italy on Sunday December 19th, 2010.

 After this competition was over the six teams them travelled to Orlando Florida to compete in the United States biggest open tournament, the US Open World ISKA Championships.  This tournament brings the best from all over the world and from all Martial art disciplines to in many different events.  The competitors From the six countriesrepresenting the International Taekwon-do Federation competed in the continuous sparring divisions.  Here are the standings from the Canadian athletes:  Richard Nguyen placed third in 159lbs and under,  Mike Blom placed Second in 170lbs-179lbs division Aziz Abdellahi placed first in the 160lbs-169lbs division, Steven Legrow placed second in the 200lbs-230lb division.  Don Smith placed second in the 159lbs and under division.

Downey’s Taekwon-Do Annual Seminar and 20th Anniversary was a great success! Over 130 students attended the seminar and 20th Anniversary Celebration, including 30 Black Belts. Master Downey took the morning session and taught Self-Defense. At lunch time Master Downey and Mrs. Downey cut their 20th Anniversary cake. After lunch Mrs. Downey did a thorough presentation of the “9 Training Secrets” and the “Theory of Power”. Even the younger children were very attentive throughout the session and many raised their hands to volunteer to demonstrate the concepts being taught. Master Downey then took participants through the “Pattern” portion of the seminar and emphasized the importance of implementing the concepts taught by Mrs. Downey’s presentation. Students showed that they were paying attention to what Mrs. Downey had to say because they showed great execution of technique in their patterns. Master Downey then ended the seminar with some pad work and fun racing drills.

Athletes chosen to the National Sparring Team at the pre-selections in Oakville, Ontario with Master Norman, Master Laquerre, Mr. Mackenzie and National Team Coach Mr. Nicolas Tran.

On June 6th, 2010, pre-selections took place in Oakville, Ontario.  At these pre-selections, 10 athletes were named to the ITF Canadian National Sparring Team which will compete at the World Championships in Wellington, New Zealand in March 2011. Congratulations to the following:

In the afternoon the practical component consisted of umpire exercises for both patterns and sparring. Volunteers were asked to perform various patterns to allow the participants the opportunity to practice judging patterns based on the five criteria: technical content, power, balance, breath control, and rhythm. Proper protocol was followed to ensure students understand the correct procedure to start and finish a match. Following patterns students practiced the intricate hand signals involved with centre umpire sparring duties. All too soon it was time to end the seminar.

The seminar was very professional in presentation. Mr. Otessen constantly stressed that safety and fairness were the major responsibilities of an ITF umpire. He also encouraged participants to devote as much time preparing for umpire duties as a competitor prepares for competition. Throughout the day Mr. O related some of his experiences on the world stage both as a competitor and umpire. His stories and anecdotes made the time fly by. We are very grateful to Mr. Ottesen for sharing his wealth of knowledge with us.
